We Are

By Dr. Shaheeda Ahmed

We are
Unseen sentinels
In the night
An army in waiting
To battle the fright

We are
Flames on candles
Burning bright
When hope seems forlorn
Only sorrow in sight

We are
Wings lifting spirits
Keep love alive
When hate’s voice rises
To crush you inside

We are
United against
The hand of death
When the bell calls early
To steal the last breath

We are
Better together
Not a lone star
Nothing will stop us
That’s who we are.
