Royal College selects Dr. Richard Reznick as next President-Elect

Kingston-based general surgeon and acclaimed medical educator, Richard Reznick, MD, FRCSC, has been appointed as the Royal College’s new President-Elect. As President-Elect, Dr. Reznick will aim to enhance value for Fellows, advocate for health system reforms and strengthen the Royal College on the world stage.

“Our goal as an institution is focused on the health of Canadians,” says Dr. Reznick. “We need to prioritize equity, diversity and inclusion, and weave these values into all aspects of the health care continuum from education through to our systems.”

A leader in medical education

Dr. Reznick currently serves as dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University and as chief executive officer of the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO). His passion for medical education contributed to the founding of the Wilson Centre, a renowned health profession education research institute based in Toronto.

In addition to ushering in competency-based medical education at Queen’s University, Dr. Reznick pioneered the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) that is used each year to assess thousands of medical licensure applicants in Canada. Dr. Reznick’s seminal work as an educator and researcher has been recognized by organizations such as the Medical Council of Canada, Royal College of Surgeons of England and Karolinska Institutet.

Dr. Reznick has been actively involved with the Royal College for nearly three decades. He has served in various leadership capacities, including as the Royal College’s vice president of education and as Royal College International’s vice chair.

Dr. Reznick will assume the President-Elect position on February 21, 2020.
