Royal College and ACCME Announce Collaboration to Expand Educational Opportunities for Fellows
Fellows and MOC Participants will soon be able to access more than 9,000 accredited assessment activities to report Section 3 credits
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) are pleased to announce a new collaboration that is expanding the number and diversity of Section 3 credits available to Royal College Fellows and MOC Participants in the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program.
The Royal College and the ACCME share a commitment to advancing professional practice and health care. With this collaboration, by the end of November, we will have added 7,000 more accredited assessment activities that meet the requirements of self-assessment programs (SAPs) to the Royal College’s MAINPORT ePortfolio, bringing the total number of choices available up to 9,000.
The additional activities are accredited under the ACCME’s “CME in support of MOC” program. They have been developed by accredited CME providers through a collaboration between the ACCME and six American specialty certifying boards:
- American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) MOCA
- American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) MOC
- American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) MOC
- American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) Continuing Certification
- American Board of Pathology (ABPath) Continuing Certification
- American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) MOC
Royal College Fellows and MOC Participants will be able to report their participation in these accredited activities available on or after November 1, 2019.
The new collaboration builds on the long-standing relationship between the Royal College and the ACCME. The two accreditation systems recognize each other as substantially equivalent.
“With this partnership, we are bringing Royal College Fellows more choice and flexibility for claiming valuable MOC Program Section 3 credits. We highly value our relationship with the ACCME and our collaborations over the years to deliver high-quality education to our Fellows and MOC Participants. This latest partnership will bring us closer to our mutual goals to advance professional practice and enhance patient care.” — Andrew Padmos, BA, MD, FRCPC, FACP, FRCP, Chief Executive Officer, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
“By working together, the ACCME and the Royal College enable our community of educators to offer Royal College Fellows more flexibility in choosing effective, relevant education that meets their needs and supports their dedication to delivering the highest quality care. We celebrate our long-standing relationship with the Royal College because it builds collaboration across borders and helps us to achieve our shared goal to support physicians in delivering optimal health care for all.”—Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, President and CEO, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is the national professional association that oversees the medical education of specialists in Canada. We accredit the university programs that train resident physicians for their specialty practices and administer the examinations that residents must pass to become certified as specialists. In collaboration with health organizations and government agencies, we also play a role in developing sound health policy in Canada.
ACCME
The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago, responsible for accrediting organizations that offer continuing medical education (CME) and for recognizing state medical societies as accreditors of local CME programs. The ACCME is a cofounder of Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™.
The ACCME sets standards for CME that reflect the values of the educator community and aim to accelerate learning, inspire change, and champion improvement in healthcare. These standards ensure that accredited CME is designed to be relevant to clinicians’ needs, evidence-based, evaluated for its effectiveness, and independent of commercial influence. Through participation in accredited CME, clinicians and teams drive improvement in their practice and optimize the care, health, and wellness of their patients.
Accredited CME facilitates engagement with physicians and healthcare teams where they live, learn, and work. There are approximately 1,700 accredited CME providers within the ACCME System, across the country and internationally, representing a range of organizations including medical schools, hospitals/health systems, government/military agencies, specialty societies, and insurance/managed-care companies. Accredited providers offer about 180,000 activities each year, comprising more than one million hours of instruction and including more than 36 million interactions with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
