Notice of request to change discipline name: Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography
The Committee on Specialties (COS) recently considered a request from the Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Working Group in Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography to change the AFC’s name.
Original name | Proposed name |
Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography | Neonatal Hemodynamics and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography |
Stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on this proposed name change by February 6, 2022.
Please forward comments to the Office of Specialty Education cos@royalcollege.ca (Attn: Jason R. Frank, MD, FRCPC, MA(Ed), director, Specialty Education, Strategy and Standards)
Rationale for name change
Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography was approved as a Royal College AFC in the fall of 2019.
The name change request contends three things:
- Echocardiography is only one of the primary tools in the application of skills for the AFC.
- A vital component of the AFC’s scope of practice is the process of understanding and integrating hemodynamic data into intensive care management. This should be reflected in the AFC’s name.
- This modification to the AFC’s name is well-aligned with the discipline’s growth and the nomenclature in use by national and international organizations, and specialty societies. The proposed name is also already used for fellowship programs.
Public notification of change
As stipulated in the COS Policy 1.6 that governs modifications to a discipline’s name, the Office of Specialty Education (OSE) must conduct a public notification of the intended change and invite feedback from stakeholders. All feedback received by February 6, 2022, will be collated and reviewed by the OSE prior to rendering a final decision. If the application is accepted, a notice will be made to impacted Royal College staff, committees and stakeholders.
