Howard Bryan Bongard, MD, FRCPC, died on July 29, 2022, in North York, Ont., at age 74. Dr. Bongard was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine (1976) and Respirology (1977). For over four decades, he cared for patients and worked as a dedicated physician at Scarborough General Hospital. He is remembered for his quirky humour and selflessness. Read more about Dr. Bongard.
Geoffrey Allan Machin, MBChB, FRCPC, died on July 23, 2022, in Victoria, B.C., at age 82. Dr. Machin was certified by the Royal College in Anatomical Pathology in 1978. He worked in Western Canada for most of his career where he held the positions of director of laboratories at Alberta Children’s Hospital and pediatric pathologist at Victoria General Hospital, among others. Stephen Wayne McKenzie, MD, FRCPC, died on July 18, 2022, in Mississauga, Ont., at age 68. Dr. McKenzie was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1982. At Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga where he worked for forty years, he was one of the Neurology department’s founding members. He was also a leader in the field of multiple sclerosis. Lorne Elliot Segall, MD, FRCSC, died on July 17, 2022, in Mississauga, Ont., at age 49. Dr Segall was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery (2000) and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (2006). He worked as an otolaryngologist at Credit Valley Hospital. He is remembered as an intelligent clinician and talented surgeon who was dedicated to his practice and to helping patients. Read more about Dr. Segall.
Ragbir Singh Kumar, MBBS, FRCPC, died on July 12, 2022, in Cambridge, Ont., at age 82. Dr. Kumar was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1970. He practised Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at his clinic and at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, where he also served as chief of medicine. Read more about Dr. Kumar.
Jean-Marie Ruel, MD, FRCPC, died on July 10, 2022, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 84. Dr. Ruel was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 2011. He worked for many years as an adult and child psychiatrist in Quebec City, where he also endeavored to provide services to underserved regions. He relocated to Ottawa in 1986 to lead a new pan-Canadian methadone treatment program. Read more about Dr. Ruel.
Cameron McKinnon Stevenson, MD, FRCPC, died on June 16, 2022, in Kingston, Ont., at age 92. Dr. Stevenson was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1963. He worked for many years at the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital before starting a private practice in 1989. He is remembered as a caring doctor who was dedicated to helping his patients. Donald Arthur Leitch Dick, MBChB, FRCPC, died on April 29, 2022, in Birmingham, Ala., at age 97. Dr. Dick was certified by the Royal College in Therapeutic Radiology in 1958. Throughout is career, he practised radiation oncology in Great Britain, Canada and the United States. He is remembered for his contributions to patients, medical students and colleagues through his practice, teaching and publications. Read more about Dr. Dick.
Selwyn Michael Smith, MD, FRCPC, died on January 18, 2022, in Sydney, Aus., at age 79. Dr. Smith was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1976. He had a long career as a psychiatrist, working in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. He specialized in post-traumatic stress injuries and was revered for assisting police officers and other first responders. Read more about Dr. Smith.
