Johannes Vagn Asfeldt, MD, FRCSC, died on April 30, 2019, in Kamloops, B.C., at age 89. Dr. Asfeldt was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1970. Highly regarded by his staff and his peers, he travelled to Africa on eight missions to work in relief. Read more about Dr. Asfeldt.

Stanley Perry Barron, MD, FRCPC, died on April 19, 2019, in Toronto at age 79. Dr. Barron was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1969. As a psychiatrist at Rouge Valley Centenary Health Centre, he was known for his great empathy and compassion. Read more about Dr. Barron.

Eung-Jun Cha, MD,FRCSC, died on January 19, 2019, in Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A., at age 69. Dr. Cha was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1985. From assisting his physician grandfather during his childhood to running a private practice for nearly two decades, Dr. Cha lived his life in medicine. Read more about Dr. Cha.

John Charles Cronhelm, MBChB,FRCPC, died on June 23, 2019, in St. John’s, N.L., at age 88. Dr. Cronhelm was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1970. A pioneer of Newfoundland and Labrador’s health system, he was the first physician in the province to “ventilate premature babies.” Read more about Dr. Cronhelm.

John Roque Fernandes, MD,FRCPC, FRCSC, died on April 18, 2019, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 62. Dr. Fernandes was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1988) and General Pathology (2002). He worked as chief of laboratory medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences and director of Hamilton Regional Forensic Unit. A longstanding volunteer at the Royal College, Dr. Fernandes co-founded the subspecialty Forensic Pathology in 2012 and was a program director from 2011 to 2018. Gordon Mohammed Jasey, MDCM,FRCSC, died on July 12, 2019, in Windsor, Ont., at age 90. Dr. Jasey was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1963. Louise Klipin, MD,FRCPC, died on May 6, 2019, in Saint John, N.B., at age 48. Dr. Klipin was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 2017. Her patients at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital considered Dr. Klipin to be a “life-saver.” Read more about Dr. Klipin.

Peter Jules Thomas Nicholson, MD,FRCPC, died on July 16, 2019, in Vernon, B.C., at age 43. Dr. Nicholson was certified by the Royal College in General Pathology in 2015. He worked as a pathologist at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Read more about Dr. Nicholson.

David Boyd Peddle, MD,FRCSC, died on June 8, 2019, in St. John’s, N.L., at age 80. Dr. Peddle was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1971. Memorial University’s Dr. David B. Peddle Award for Excellence in Orthopedic Surgery is given annually in honour of his legacy. Read more about Dr. Peddle.

Nicole Racette, MD,FRCSC, died on April 8, 2019, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 60. Dr. Racette was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1987. Before becoming a clinical professor at Vancouver General Hospital, she worked at the Royal Columbian Hospital, Genesis Fertility Centre, and B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. Dr. Racette also served as a Royal College CBD observer in Surgical Foundations (2018-2019). Read more about Dr. Racette.

Peter Alastair Reardon, MD,FRCSC, died on July 11, 2019, in Greeneville, TN, U.S.A., at age 74. Dr. Reardon was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1982. He delivered thousands of babies at Laughlin Memorial Hospital and also maintained a private practice. Read more about Dr. Reardon.

Glasier Mitchell Somerville, MD,FRCSC, died on July 28, 2019, in Toronto at age 85. Dr. Somerville was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1969. He was head of Ophthalmology at North York General Hospital, before joining Toronto Eye Clinic and teaching part-time at Sunnybrook Hospital. Read more about Dr. Somerville.

Gordon Maxwell Winsor, MDCM, FRCSC, died on June 24, 2019, in Paradise, N.L., at age 87. Dr. Winsor was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1967. He is remembered as a “dedicated physician and surgeon.” Read more about Dr. Winsor.
