In memoriam (October 2021)
John Herbert Burgess, MDCM, FRCPC, died on August 23, 2021, at his cottage on Lake Memphremagog in Vermont, USA, at age 88. Dr. Burgess was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1963. A giant in the field of Cardiology, he was a Royal College Past-President. Iqbal Hussain Butt, MBBS, FRCSC, died on in Lahore, Pakistan, in February 2021 at age 73. Dr. Butt was certified by the Royal College in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1978.
Clinton S. L. Ho, MD, FRCPC, died on June 2, 2021, in Burnaby, B.C., at age 57. Dr. Ho was certified by the Royal College in General Pathology (1999) and Hematological Pathology (2012). Since 2021, he worked at LifeLabs and was a member of the Medical Scientific team in British Columbia. He served as a volunteer on the Royal College General Pathology Examination Board.
Zoltan John Makkay, MD, FRCSC, died on August 28, 2021, in Niagara Falls, Ont., at age 86. Dr Makkay was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1967. In 1956, he emigrated to Canada from Hungary. From 1968 to his retirement in 2004, he worked on the Obstetrics and Gynecology medical staff at the North York General Hospital. William Stanley M. Monk, MD, FRCSC, died on August 12, 2021, in Bracebridge, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Monk was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1958. Outside of medicine, he enjoyed music. Over 50 years ago, he established The Cellar Singers choir who continue to perform in the Orillia, Simcoe Country and Muskoka communities. Ross Murphy, MDCM, FRCSC, died on February 7, 2021, in Montreal, Que., at age 90. Dr. Murphy was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1962. After close to 37 years in practice, he retired from the Montreal General Hospital in 1995. Tragically, he and his wife of 60 years both died of COVID-19, one day apart. They are fondly remembered by their loved ones. Read more.
Francis Wayne Quan, MD, FRCPC, died on August 9, 2021, in Burnaby, B.C, at age 74. Dr. Quan was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1976. He was a founding member of the Psychiatric Journal of the University of Ottawa and served for a time as its managing editor. A stroke in 2019 forced him to make the difficult decision to close his medical practice. Read more about Dr. Quan.
Hugh James F. Robertson, MD, FRCPC, died on June 1, 2021, in New Orleans, LA, USA, at age 88. Dr. Robertson was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1966. He ended his career as an emeritus professor of radiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and clinical professor of radiology at Tulane University Medical Centre. Jaan Olav Roos, MD, FRCPC, died on August 3, 2021, in Toronto, Ont., at age 84. Dr. Roos was certified by the Royal College in Respirology in 1976. During his career, he worked in Respirology, occupational and family medicine, and as a coroner. He was inducted into the Canadian Masters Athletics Halls of Fame in 2012 for his contributions to racewalking. Read more about Dr. Roos.
