Carlos Arranz, MD, FRCPC, died on January 5, 2020, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Arranz was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1966. He worked 25 years at The Ottawa Hospital’s Riverside Campus. Read more about Dr. Arranz.

Joseph Michael Dooley, MBChB, FRCPC, died on February 1, 2020, in Halifax, N.S., at age 69. Dr. Dooley was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1980. For 37 years, he practised at IWK Health Centre and taught at Dalhousie University. Read more about Dr. Dooley.

Norman Epstein, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on December 15, 2019, in Toronto, Ont., at age 91. Dr. Epstein was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1957. He graduated from Dalhousie University with his medical degree in 1953. Read more about Dr. Epstein.

Adelaide Louise Fleming McLeese, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on December 26, 2019, in Toronto, Ont., at age 99. Dr. Fleming was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1949. She devoted more than 50 years to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Read more about Dr. Fleming.

Emily Janet Gear Berkman, MD, FRCSC, died on January 22, 2020, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Gear was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1954. In addition to training residents and clinical practice, she served on the council of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). Read more about Dr. Gear.

John Desmond Horan, MD, FRCPC, died on December 9, 2019, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 91. Dr. Horan was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1957. While running a private practice, he taught at the University of British Columbia. Read more about Dr. Horan.

Melville Greig Kerr, MBChB, FRCSC, died on January 25, 2020, in Calgary, Alta., at age 90. Dr. Kerr was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984. His distinguished career included serving as a departmental head at Foothills Medical Centre and as a director at the University of Calgary. Read more about Dr. Kerr.

Gaston A. Lapointe, MD, FRCSC, died on January 2, 2020, in Chicoutimi, Que., at age 92. Dr. Lapointe was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1958. He was known for his exceptional professionalism. Read more about Dr. Lapointe.

Venkatray “Ray” Vithal Muzumdar, MBBS, FRCSC, died on December 4, 2019, in Waterloo, Ont., at age 91. Dr. Muzumdar was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1969. Formerly a departmental head at the Grand River Hospital, he practised his specialty for over 30 years. Read more about Dr. Muzumdar.

James Patrick O’Boyle Kelly, MD, FRCSC, died on December 3, 2019, in Belleville, Ont., at age 91. Dr. O’Boyle Kelly was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1968. A dedicated physician, he worked as a naval surgeon and provided medical expertise to a United Nations peacekeeping force. Read more about Dr. O’Boyle Kelly.

William Donald Reid, MD, FRCPC, died on January 13, 2020, in London, Ont., at age 80. Dr. Reid was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1969. In the 55 years he worked as a specialist, he served many communities across Canada. He also previously volunteered on the Royal College’s Pediatrics Examination Board (1985-1988). Jocelyne Tessier, MD, FRCSC, died on January 12, 2020, in Repentigny, Que., at age 61. Dr. Tessier was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1987. She graduated from the Université de Montréal with her medical degree in 1982. She also served on the Royal College’s Examination Committee (1998-2000, 2000-2001) and Urology Examination Board (1995-1997). Read more about Dr. Tessier.

Chelsea John Thiel, MD, FRCPC, died on December 21, 2019, in Apsley, Ont., at age 96. Dr. Thiel was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1963. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with his medical degree in 1950. Read more about Dr. Thiel.

Shirley M. Baker Thomas, MD, FRCPC, died on January 15, 2020, in West Vancouver, B.C., at age 90. Dr. Thomas was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1970. She graduated from the University of Toronto with her medical degree in 1952. Read more about Dr. Thomas.

Istvan Marcell Waldmann, MD, FRCPC, died on December 16, 2019, in Sudbury, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Waldmann was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1961. For 15 years, he was chief of medicine at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Read more about Dr. Waldmann.

David Antony Wheelwright, MBChB, FRCPC, died on December 12, 2019, in Kelowna, B.C., at age 94. Dr. Wheelwright was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1971. He was a practising psychiatrist for 34 years. Read more about Dr. Wheelwright.

Mary Patricia “Pat” White, MD, FRCPC, died on December 26, 2019, in Toronto, Ont., at age 95. Dr. White was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1964. She was one of 15 women to graduate from the University of Toronto with a medical degree in 1947. Read more about Dr. White.

Donald Wayne Whiteman, MD, FRCSC, died on February 3, 2020, in Trenton, Ont., at age 75. Dr. Whiteman was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1977. He worked to raise standards of care in his community. Read more about Dr. Whiteman.

Maureen “Miriam” Wolpert, MBBS, FRCSC, died on January 15, 2020, in Toronto, Ont., at age 68. Dr. Wolpert was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1987. Colleagues remember her as an “extremely gifted surgeon” and an “astute ophthalmologist.” Read more about Dr. Wolpert.
