William Stuart Huestis, MDCM, FRCSC, died on May 23, 2022, in Kentville, N.S., at age 89. Dr. Huestis was certified by the Royal College in Neurosurgery in 1962. He was awarded the McLaughlin Travelling Fellowship in 1964 and worked across Europe and North America before returning to Canada to set up his practice in Halifax where he worked for over 30 years. Jack Mendelson, MD, FRCPC, died on May 15, 2022, in Montreal, Que., at age 86. He was certified by the Royal College in Medical Microbiology (1967) and Infectious Diseases (1983). A trailblazer in the field of Infectious Diseases, he established the department at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital in 1966 where he worked for 46 years. He also served on the Royal College Infectious Diseases Exam Board. Read more about Dr. Mendelson.

Kenneth Martin Asselstine, MD, FRCSC, died on May 10, 2022, in North Bay, Ont., at age 92. Dr. Asselstine was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1964. Born in Wallaceburg, Ont., he began his medical career in the Canadian Arctic, followed by a long surgical career in North Bay. Read more about Dr. Asselstine.

Roland Buehrle, MD, FRCSC, died on May 5, 2022, in Waterloo, Ont., at age 78. He was certified by the Royal College in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1974. Dr. Buehrle obtained his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1969. Remembered as a well-respected doctor and a wonderful employer and colleague, he will be missed by his family and friends. Read more about Dr. Buehrle.

Glen Richard Van Loon, MD, FRCPC, died on January 29, 2022, in Murray, Ky., at age 81. Dr. Van Loon was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1972. He pursued a career in academia for 20 years at the University of Toronto and Toronto General Hospital, and the University of Kentucky. He conducted a research program at both universities in addition to teaching and practising Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Read more about Dr. Van Loon.

James-Peter O’Donnell, MD, FRCPC, died on October 16, 2021, in Gatineau, Que., at age 43. Dr. O’Donnell was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 2011. He devoted his career to psychiatric medicine and to the care of patients with mental health disorders. He will be missed by his family, friends and patients. Read more about Dr. O’Donnell.

Ronald James Puley, MD, FRCPC, died on June 18, 2021, in Waterloo, Ont., at age 76. Dr. Puley was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1974. He will be remembered for his life of love, adventure, curiosity, caring and service to others. His medical practice and his small, unseen acts of kindness touched countless people in the community. Eugene Jerry Rudnisky, MD, FRCSC, died on January 14, 2021, in Edmonton, Alta., at age 66. He was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1977. Never retiring, he was a dedicated ophthalmologist, practising until late November 2020. He will be sadly missed by his staff and his patients. Read more about Dr. Rudnisky.
