Gerald “Gerry” Albert Bredo, MD, FRCPC, died on November 4, 2019, in Powell River, B.C., at age 79. Dr. Bredo was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1970. He is remembered by his patients for his dedication and compassion. Read more about Dr. Bredo.
Walter Bruce Connell, MD, FRCPC, died on November 16, 2019, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 81. Dr. Connell was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1968. A third-generation physician, he ran his own private practice. Read more about Dr. Connell.
Mark Robert Dover, MD, FRCSC, died on October 27, 2019, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 91. Dr. Dover was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1960. Formerly the departmental head of General Surgery at the University of Ottawa, he worked at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus. He volunteered at the Royal College as a member of the General Surgery Examination Board (1982-1987, 1989). Read more about Dr. Dover.
David Michael Freedman, MDCM, FRCPC, died on September 7, 2019, in Markham, Ont., at age 56. Dr. Freedman was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine (1993) and Cardiology (1994). He graduated from McGill University with his medical degree in 1989. Read more about Dr. Freedman.
George Barclay Goodman, MBChB, FRCPC, died on October 28, 2019, in West Vancouver, B.C., at age 93. Dr. Goodman was certified by the Royal College in Therapeutic Radiology in 1961. He worked at the BC Cancer Agency as a radiation oncologist and medical director. He also served on the Royal College’s Radiation Oncology Examination Board (1971-1977, 1978-1979, 1983). Ruth Elisabeth Kajander, CM, MD, FRCPC, died on November 8, 2019, in Thunder Bay, Ont., at age 95. Dr. Kajander was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1956. A pioneer in the use of the drug chlorpromazine on schizophrenic patients, she was the first female president of the Ontario Psychiatric Association. George Ernest Mallouh, MBChB, FRCSC, died on November 19, 2019, in Montreal, Que., at age 90. Dr. Mallouh was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1964. He retired at age 89 from working at St. Mary’s Hospital and teaching at McGill University. Read more about Dr. Mallouh.
Edith Katherine Peterkin, MD, FRCPC, died on October 18, 2019, in Belleville, Ont., at age 96. Dr. Peterkin was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1954. She served the community of Belleville for 40 years. Read more about Dr. Peterkin.
David Campbell Spence, MD, FRCPC, died on September 29, 2019, in Edmonton, Alta., at age 56. Dr. Spence was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1995. He graduated from Dalhousie University with his medical degree in 1989. Read more about Dr. Spence.
Jean-Yves St-Laurent, MD, FRCSC, died on November 2, 2019, in Montreal, Que., at age 65. Dr. St-Laurent was certified by the Royal College in Plastic Surgery in 1982. He graduated from Laval University with his medical degree in 1977. A prolific Royal College volunteer, he served on the Plastic Surgery Examination Board (1990-1993, 1994-1996, 2008-2009, 2009). Damodar Vinayak Vaze, MBBS, FRCPC, died on September 29, 2019, in Toronto, Ont., at age 81. Dr. Vaze was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1969. For more than three decades, he practiced at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre and taught at Memorial University. Read more about Dr. Vaze.
