Hugh Wallace King Barr, MD, FRCSC, died on December 6, 2021, in Grand Bend, Ont., at age 85. Dr. Barr was certified by the Royal College in Neurosurgery in 1966. After completing his postgraduate training, he worked for 36 years as a consultant and practising neurosurgeon at the Victoria, St. Joseph’s and University hospitals in London, Ont. Maurice Nathan Druck, MD, FRCPC, died on October 14, 2021, in Toronto, at age 71. Dr. Druck was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine (1979) and Cardiology (1981). He earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1975. Before retiring, he worked in Mississauga, Ont. Read more about Dr. Druck.
Harold Israel Eist, MD, FRCPC, died on December 16, 2021, in Bethesda, MD, USA, at age 84. Dr. Eist was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1968. During a career that spanned over 50 years, Dr. Eist was an educator, association president and strong advocate for patients. From 1967-1986, he was the medical director of the DC Institute of Mental Health’s clinics. Read more about Dr. Eist.
Saya Victor Feinman, MD, FRCPC, died on December 17, 2021, in Toronto, at age 98. Dr. Feinman was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1956. A Holocaust survivor, he is remembered as one of the country’s leading liver specialists. For many years, he was the director of the Liver Study Unit at the Mount Sinai Hospital. Maria Daria Haust, OC, MD, FRCPC, died on January 11, 2022, in Toronto, at age 100. Dr. Haust was certified by the Royal College in General Pathology in 1959. A renowned pathologist and researcher, she is considered a pioneer of Pediatric Pathology. She is the recipient of many awards and honours, including the Order of Canada and the Killam Prize in Medicine. Read more about Dr. Haust.
Sophie Ludvica R. Hofstader, MDCM, FRCPC, died on December 14, 2021, in Toronto, at age 94. Dr. Hofstader was certified by the Royal College in Dermatology in 1971. Born in Poland, she worked hard to finish her medical studies in Canada after immigrating with her family. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1956, the only female in her class. Clair MacLeod, MDCM, FRCSC, died on August 1, 2021, in Halifax, at age 87. Dr. MacLeod was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1964. Born premature, he survived and thrived in life. Among other accomplishments, he established the first fertility clinic in Halifax. Dr. MacLeod also served on Royal College Council from 1982-1990. Robert Norman McKenzie, MD, FRCPC, died on December 28, 2021, in Huntsville, Ont., at age 75. Dr. McKenzie was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1976. For close to 25 years, he worked at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He later worked as a science teacher and coroner in York Region and Muskoka. Read more about Dr. McKenzie.
Cintia Vontobel Padoin, MD, FRCPC, died on December 21, 2021, in Toronto, at age 44. Dr. Padoin was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry (2013) and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2014). From Brazil, she did further medical training at McMaster University. A cherished colleague, she was a staff member at Women’s College Hospital and taught at the University of Toronto. Peter Donald Riben, MD, FRCPC, died on November 24, 2021, in Kamloops, B.C., at age 77. Dr. Riben was certified by the Royal College in Community Medicine in 1990. During his career, he worked in infection control at all levels of government as well as for the Interior Health Authority. He also taught at the University of British Columbia. Frank (Francis Patrick) Spence, MD, FRCPC, died on December 4, 2021, in Calgary, Alta., at age 63. Dr. Spence was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine (1987) and Cardiology (1988). A compassionate physician, he taught at the University of Calgary as an assistant professor and was an interventional cardiologist at Total Cardiology from 1988 to 2017. Read more about Dr. Spence.
George Wyse, MD, FRCPC, died on January 6, 2022, in Canmore, Alta., at age 80. Dr. Wyse was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine (1977) and Cardiology (1979). A professor emeritus at the Cumming School of Medicine, he was a distinguished cardiac arrhythmia clinician-scientist and longstanding member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute.
