Donald Gilbert M. Lawrence, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on August 28, 2022, in Montreal, Que., at age 90. Dr. Lawrence was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1974. He obtained his medical education and worked for many years in the Department of Medicine (Neurology) at the Montreal General Hospital. He also taught as an associate professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill. Read more about Dr. Lawrence.

Waldo Kurtz Stavraky, MD, FRCPC, died on April 18, 2022, in London, Ont., at age 87. Dr. Stavraky was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1963. He studied medicine at the University of Western Ontario and later specialized in Plastic Surgery at Mt. Vernon Hospital. He will be remembered for his love of photography and devotion to his family. Robert Victor Ogilvie, MBBS, FRCPC, died on October 11, 2022, in Thornhill, Ont., at age 84. Dr. Ogilvie was certified by the Royal College in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1970. Raised in Grenada and the first Caribbean Rhodes Scholar, his medical education later included schools such as Oxford University. He was chief of surgery at the York-Finch/Humber Hospital in West Toronto and practised medicine in the Toronto area for many years. Read more about Dr. Ogilvie.

Firouz Khamsi, MBChB, FRCPC, died on June 21, 2022, in Toronto, Ont., at age 80. Dr. Khamsi was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1971. He studied medicine at the University of Birmingham and practised in the Toronto area. He will be remembered as the poet laureate of his family. Read more about Dr. Khamsi.

Christopher F. Hoskins, MBChB, FRCPC, died on September 4, 2022, in Canmore, Alta., at age 74. Dr. Hoskins was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979. Originally from the UK, he was brought up in New Zealand before moving to Alberta for a residency. Dr. Hoskins subsequently worked as an obstetrician at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital for over 40 years. Read more about Dr. Hoskins.

Sherif Sami Hanna, MBChB, FRCPC, died on August 25, 2022, in Toronto, Ont., at age 78. Dr. Hanna was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1976. Born in Egypt, he completed his medical education there before moving to Canada where his career included roles as both trauma surgeon and researcher. He eventually served as head of General Surgery at Sunnybrook and head of the Surgical Oncology Program at the Odette Cancer Centre. Read more about Dr. Hanna.

Eric Raymond Freedman, MD, FRCPC, died on September 25, 2022, in Granite Bay, Calif., at age 64. Dr. Freedman was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1992. He completed his Urology residency at Dalhousie University before working in many different communities across Canada and the United States. He will be missed by his family and friends. John Elmer Green, MC/CM, FRCPC, died on September 30, 2022, in Brockville, Ont., at age 98. Dr. Green was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1956. Following medical school at Queen’s University in Kingston, he worked in Anesthesiology for many decades at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus). He also taught as an associate professor at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine. Read more about Dr. Green.

Hans Klaus Uhthoff, MD, FRCPC, died on July 16, 2022, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 97. Dr. Uhthoff was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1958. A chance to work as chief of an Orthopedic Surgery unit in Ottawa brought him to Canada from his native Germany, a move that allowed him to become a professor at the University of Ottawa. He became president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association in 1983 and continued to practise medicine into his 80s. Read more about Dr. Uhthoff.

John Simurda, MD, FRCPC, died on October 9, 2022, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 99. Dr. Simurda was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1957. Born in Slovakia, he emigrated to Canada with his family as a child and studied medicine at the University of Ottawa. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends. Mary Elizabeth Williams, MBChB, FRCPC, died on March 10, 2022, in Edmonton, Alta., at age 94. Dr. Williams was certified by the Royal College in Anatomical Pathology in 1986. She completed her medical education at the University of Liverpool in the 1950s, where she was one of the few female students in a class of 150. Her medical work in Canada began in Edmonton as a virologist before she shifted to Anatomical Pathology later in her career. Read more about Dr. Williams.

John William M. Kelly, MD, FRCPC, died on September 3, 2022, in Dorval, Que., at age 94. Dr. Kelly was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1961. He began his career as chief of surgery at Jeffrey Hale Hospital before working for Alcan Aluminum for many years. Dr. Kelly also served as a volunteer member of the Royal College Occupational Medicine Examination Board. Read more about Dr. Kelly.

Peter John Fowler, OC, MD, FRCPC, died on November 16, 2022, in London, Ont., at age 84. Dr. Fowler was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1969. He built an international reputation as an orthopedic surgeon and was a professor emeritus in the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. Fowler served in many international and national professional societies and as chief medical officer on Canadian teams at Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Read more about Dr. Fowler.
