In memoriam (December 2021)
Elaine Binns, MD, FRCPC, died on January 24, 2021, in Whakatane, New Zealand, at age 88. Dr. Binns was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1971. An adventurer with an inquisitive mind, she travelled from her home in England eventually settling in Canada and New Zealand. Read more about Dr. Binns.
John Drummond Donaldson, MD, FRCSC, died on September 19, 2021, in Fort Myers, FL, USA, at age 77. Dr. Donaldson was certified by the Royal College in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1978. Born and trained in medicine in Saskatchewan, he was in practice for over 50 years. Read more about Dr. Donaldson.
Boi Ngoc Thi Hoang, MD, FRCSC, died on September 30, 2021, in Dundas, Ont., at age 86. Dr. Hoang was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1977. The top graduate of her medical class at the University of Saigon, she served the Hamilton, Ont., community for more than 55 years. Read more about Dr. Hoang.
Siavash Jafari, MD, FRCPC, died on February 21, 2021, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 52. Dr. Jafari was certifed by the Royal College in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in 2013. He served on the Royal College Regional Advisory Committee for Region 1 from 2016-2020. Dr. Jafari was clinical faculty in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Neil Mowchun, MD, FRCPC, died on January 19, 2021, in Winnipeg, Man., at age 73. Dr. Mowchun was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1977. Born in present-day Ukraine, he and his family made a dangerous passage through the Soviet “iron curtain” to reach Canada. He practised Psyciatry for close to 50 years in a home-based practice in Manitoba. Read more about Dr. Mowchun.
Barbara Ng, MD, FRCPC, died on June 20, 2021, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 42. Dr. Ng was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 2019. Known for her empathy and compassion, she was an internist at Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health. Read more about Dr. Ng.
Robert Sargeant, MD, FRCPC, died on November 28, 2021, in Toronto, Ont., at age 54. Dr. Sargeant was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 2004. He practised General Internal Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and was also active in medical education. A memorial fund has been set up in his memory. Read more about Dr. Sargeant.
Allen Francis Trautman, MD, FRCSC, died on April 4, 2021, in Lethbridge, Alta., at age 68. Dr. Trautman was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1982. He was passionate about healing people and spent many years serving the people of Lethbridge. He also took up ranching as “his second job.” Read more about Dr. Trautman.
