In memoriam (August 2019)
Frederick Andermann, OC, MD, FRCPC, died on June 16, 2019, in Montreal, Que., at age 88. Dr. Andermann was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1961. Famed neurologist and longtime collaborator with his physician-wife, Dr. Andermann was an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to his specialty. Read more about Dr. Andermann.
George Elie Deeb, MD, FRCSC, died on June 20, 2019, in Mont-Royal, Que., at age 86. Dr. Deeb became a member of the Royal College in 2011, recognized for his certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec in Orthopedic Surgery. Read more about Dr. Deeb.
Alexander “Dooley” Philip Goumeniouk, MD, FRCPC, died on June 11, 2019, in West Vancouver, B.C., at age 61. Dr. Goumeniouk was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1991. He served on the Royal College’s Specialty Committee on Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology from 1997 to 2002. Known for being “larger-than-life,” he wore many hats: clinical psychiatrist, professor, medical director and entrepreneur. Read more about Dr. Goumeniouk.
Brian Patrick Kavanagh, MBChB, FRCPC, died on June 15, 2019, in Toronto, Ont., at age 56. Dr. Kavanagh was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1992. He worked as a staff physician, pediatric intensive care unit, at the Hospital for Sick Children. He was also a senior scientist and professor at the University of Toronto. Alain Paul Rousseau, CM, MD, FRCSC, died on May 20, 2019, in Quebec, Que., at age 90. Dr. Rousseau was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1962. Renowned in his field, he was invested into the Order of Canada in 1988 for his research in ocular disease. Dr. Rousseau was a former president of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. Duncan Alexander Scott, MD, FRCPC, died on June 12, 2019, in Kingston, Ont., at age 70. Dr. Scott was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1987. Deeply respected, he is remembered as a “brilliant physician” and “kind hearted man with a generous spirit.” He is missed by his family and friends. Read more about Dr. Scott.
Charles Brian Warriner, MD, FRCPC, died on May 12, 2019, in Richmond, B.C., at age 73. Dr. Warriner was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1980. From 1992 to 1996, he served on the Royal College’s Anesthesiology Examination Board. He was also head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia from 2002 to 2012. Read more about Dr. Warriner.
John Paul Joseph Whelan, MD, FRCSC, died on June 29, 2019, in Victoria, B.C., at age 62. Dr. Whelan was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1987. The founder of the McMaster Institute of Urology, he was a volunteer on the Royal College’s Urology Examination Board for over five years.
