Dr. Simon Fleming: 2019 International Resident Leadership Award recipient

Dr. Simon Fleming, MBBS, MRCS, MSc, MAcadMEd, MASE(RACS), MFSTEd, FRSA, AFHEA, Barts and The London School of Medicine (London, United Kingdom)
Dr. Simon Fleming is a Trauma and Orthopaedic registrar at the Percivall Pott Rotation in London, United Kingdom. He is also the immediate past president of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA), the vice chair of the Academy Trainee Doctors’ Group (ATDG), and a PhD candidate in medical education at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
He is also the project lead for the Orthopaedic section of the Royal College of Surgeons postgraduate certificate in Surgery and faculty for the intercollegiate basic surgical skills and surgical skills for student courses. He is heavily involved in mentoring and teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates. His contributions have been recognized with a Surgeon Educator Award from the Royal College of Surgeons and the Academic Support Award from Queen Mary University, and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Fleming is passionate about Orthopaedics, improving surgical training, competency attainment and combating bullying in surgery. During his presidency at BOTA, he instigated the award winning #Hammeritout campaign, an anti-bullying initiative that promotes culture change in surgical training. This campaign has been adopted by other surgical training programs and organizations in the United Kingdom and abroad including the Association of Surgeons in Training, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Through #Hammeritout campaign on which he has also delivered a TEDx talk, Dr. Fleming has shown bravery and leadership transforming the training environments for the current and the next generation of health care professionals.
