Dr. Melchor Sánchez-Mendiola: 2019 International Medical Educator of the Year Award recipient

Dr. Melchor Sánchez-Mendiola, MD, MHPE, PhD, National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Dr. Melchor Sánchez-Mendiola is a Mexican Paediatrician and medical educator. He studied Medicine and Pediatrics at the Mexican Army Medical School, Mexican Army and Air Force University. He worked as clinical research fellow in the Laboratory of Human Nutrition and Metabolism, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, United States of America (USA). He has a Master in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, and Doctorate in Educational Sciences, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is full-time professor of medical education at the Postgraduate Studies Division, UNAM Faculty of Medicine in Mexico City. He is responsible for the Master in Health Sciences Education program at UNAM.
He has been a lecturer in over 500 continuing education courses in Mexico and abroad. He is the author and co-author of 102 peer reviewed publications in national and international journals, related to Pediatrics, critical care, human nutrition and metabolism, medical education (resident as teacher, evidence-based medicine, educational assessment, and educational innovation), medical informatics. He published eight books and 42 book chapters related to evidence-based medicine, medical informatics and medical education, and has 918 citations in the Science Citation Index. He has directed 34 thesis of residents, general physicians and candidates pursuing a master or doctor of health sciences education.
Dr. Sánchez-Mendiola is also associate editor of Advances in Health Sciences Education, and editor-in-chief of the Mexican journal Investigación en Educación Médica. He is a member of more than a dozen academic organizations including the: American Academy of Pediatrics, Mexico National Academy of Medicine, Mexican Academy of Pediatrics, National Council of Measurement in Education, Association for Medical Education in Europe, Mexican Council of Education Research, and more. He is also member-at-large of the National Board of Medical Examiners in the United States.
