Dear Fellows,

I have a few new updates this week. In addition to launching a new report, I also wanted to share practical COVID-19 training resources, highlight research being done by a Fellow and honour our colleague, Dr. Huy Hao Dao.

New report on AI and emerging digital technologies

Advanced technology will impact all specialties in some way, at some point in time. Recognizing this, Royal College Council commissioned a task force in 2018 to look into how artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging digital technologies may impact the training of future specialists and expectations of those already in practice.

Their final report was released today after 18 months of analysis, key informant interviews with AI experts and other stakeholder engagement. In fact, Fellows and residents played a pivotal role in helping to shape the report’s 12 recommendations, through survey input and a special roundtable event.

This document will serve as an important guide to ongoing discussions.

Follow-up: Hands-on COVID-19 content

Earlier this month, I highlighted a story in our newsroom about Dr. Glenn Posner and how he and his team were working on a COVID-19 simulation series. That series of videos ― The Ottawa Hospital’s COVID-19 Virtual Reality resources ― is now available.  I encourage you to check it out. There are 14 practical cases to assess and improve team preparedness for managing a variety of COVID-19 patient scenarios.

In addition, we have newly added a chapter on COVID-19 Pneumonia to our free interactive eBook: Navigating Medical Emergencies.  I hope you find it useful and informative.

Celebrating Fellows

This week we have posted the first article in our new COVID-19 Research Q&A Series. It introduces Dr. Robert Maunder and his work to support mental health on the front lines of COVID-19. Read about Dr. Maunder’s research in our newsroom.

Also, next Friday is National Physicians’ Day in Canada. My update will highlight some of the touching submissions we have received from Fellows for our new Perspectives series. In the meantime, you can read the first two entries in this series on our newsroom: Dr. Villela: Coming together in the time of COVID-19 and Dr. St. Pierre: A letter to my husband.

Remembering Dr. Dao

I am sorry to end this email with some sad news. It came to our attention last Friday that one of our Fellows, Huy Hao Dao, MD, FRCPC, has died from complications due to COVID-19. This is very distressing to all of us. We have posted a short tribute on our newsroom. I encourage you to read more about Dr. Dao and his important contributions to our profession (news links are included for more details).

Until my next update, please take care.

Susan
