Announcing the Royal College’s interim CEO, effective March 1
As we shared on November 1, 2022, Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, FRCSC, PhD, MBA, FACS, will be stepping down as CEO of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada on February 28, 2023, to join Beth Israel Lahey Health in Boston, Massachusetts, as president of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. We have been working very closely with the Royal College Council and the Royal College International (RCI) Board to develop a detailed transition plan and we are pleased to provide you with an update on these steps.
We are grateful that M. Ian Bowmer, MDCM, FRCPC, FRCP, FCAHS, has accepted the role of interim CEO of the Royal College, effective March 1, 2023. Dr. Bowmer will be onsite at the Royal College in the weeks leading up to his start date to work closely with Dr. Moffatt-Bruce for overlap and knowledge exchange.
Dr. Bowmer is no stranger to the Royal College; he served as President from 2020-2022. He has been an active volunteer for 40 years, starting as a volunteer examiner and then eventually being appointed to Royal College Council, where he served as chair of the Accreditation and Credentials Committees prior to his term as President.
His distinguished career includes 40 years practising as an internist and infectious disease specialist in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He is a former dean of medicine and professor emeritus at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland and was the executive director of the Medical Council of Canada for 11 years. His outstanding contributions to both medicine and medical education have been recognized in both Canada and internationally: he was elected to the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 2003; he received the James H. Graham Award of Merit from the Royal College in 2012; and he received the 150th year anniversary medal for contributions to the community from the Canadian Senate.
The search for a successor for Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is now underway and the search committee will have its first meeting on December 16, 2022. We will continue to update you as the recruitment progresses and will provide more details in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, we are confident that both Drs. Moffatt-Bruce and Bowmer will lead the Royal College through this transition as they always do, with grace, competence and aplomb.
